How many data requests
did governments file to GOOGLE?

Each year, Google received a bunch of data requests from governments all over the world asking for user information and the number has been growing over the years. In Google's Transpanrency Report, the company disclosed the number of requests it received from each government in six-month periods except 2009, which was reported on a full year basis. The top graph shows the five countries that filed the most requests and the total number of accounts affected by the investigations. The bottom graph illusatrates the complete dataset.

Note: The number of total accounts afftected includes all the user accounts that were related to requests from governments all over the world, not only limited to the top five countries. Google didn't start disclosing this data until 2011.

In 2009, only 21 countries filed data requests asking Google to hand over user information. In 2014, by the end of June, 67 countries have filed requests. Click on the tabs below to explore the complete dataset.
